About McTear's - Scotland's Favourite Auction House

McTear’s is one of the largest independent auction houses in the UK, with a market leading position in the sale of fine art, whisky and jewellery. It is also the country's favourite auction house, a survey by Scotpulse found in November/December 2022.

Founded in 1842, the Glasgow based company has welcomed a host of high profile names over the years with legendary Scottish philanthropist, William Burrell, a frequent visitor to the auction house in earlier days.

In more recent times McTear’s has extended its reach, building an impressive database of buyers and sellers in over a hundred countries across the globe. Whatever the item, sellers can be assured that their precious lot will be placed in front of those most likely to purchase, no matter where in the world they are.

Whether buying or selling, McTear’s advanced bidding system puts the customer at the heart of the process. The auction house has embraced digital technology and offers an advanced online bidding system through mctears.co.uk/live to complement the company’s telephone and on site services.

Under the guidance of an experienced team of specialists, McTear’s departments have grown significantly over the years. These include departments of whisky, jewellery, watches, coins, silver, Asian works of art, ceramics & glass, works of art, British & International Pictures, Scottish Contemporary Art, medals & militaria and more.

The auction house’s contemporary and fine art sales are now a highlight for buyers and sellers everywhere, with many internationally recognised Scottish artists such as Peter Howson, John Bellany, Graham McKean and Gerard Burns regularly featuring in the monthly auctions.

The jewellery department has seen considerable expansion, with a host of stunning contemporary and historical pieces drawing the attention of collectors at home and overseas every month.

Add to this specialist auctions in Asian works of art, silver, ceramics & glass, wine, coins & banknotes, watches, clocks, scientific & musical instruments, militaria, furniture, works of art and sports memorabilia, it is clear that McTear’s has a home for every item.

McTear’s takes its role within the community extremely seriously and over the years has supported a number of good causes including Marie Curie Cancer Care, Glasgow Women's Aid and the Ardgowan Hospice, amongst others. Everything sold by the auction house on behalf of a registered charity is sold without commission.

McTear's Head Office and Auction Galleries are situated just south of the Clyde Tunnel adjacent to the M8 motorway. The Galleries are open every weekday from 8.30am until 5pm and on Saturday mornings. The facilities at McTear’s Galleries boast a private car park and café.
