Graham McKean's 'Angels' sure to fly high at McTear's auction...  A unique oil painting depicting the current and former First Minister of Scotland as ‘Angels of the North’ is due to go under the hammer in Glasgow this month.

The painting, the first in a series of political portraits by Graham McKean, one of the country’s most celebrated artists, shows Nicola Sturgeon riding a motorcycle with Alex Salmond giving the thumbs up from the sidecar.
Experts estimate the painting could fetch between £2000 and £4000 when it goes on sale at The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction at McTear’s in Glasgow on Sunday, 18th September.

‘Angels of the North’ shows the First Minister and the MP for Gordon riding along the coast of Scotland in a red motorcycle and sidecar. Whilst Mr Salmond is giving the thumbs up, Ms Sturgeon is focusing on the road ahead dressed in a purple suit, stilettos and flashing a glimpse of her stockings.

The highly acclaimed artist whose works have featured in some of the world’s top galleries and has been acknowledged by a number of his peers including the internationally renowned Peter Howson, was inspired to create the piece of artwork despite not being a supporter of any political party. With no political bias, McKean felt he was in a good position to portray the leader of the SNP and her predecessor in a humorous way. McKean said: “I am not a political person or a supporter of any one party but I do enjoy satire. There’s no hostility in this series of paintings and as Scotland and the UK are living through extraordinary political times I’m doing what many artists have done for generations; having a gentle laugh at our best known politicians. ‘Angels of the North’ is the first in a series of paintings featuring some of our best known politicians and major celebrities.” McKean’s paintings have been sold by all major UK auction houses and buyers have paid more than £5000 for several of his most popular pictures. He has also completed a number of high profile commissions for a number of multi national organisations.

Commenting on the painting, McTear’s Managing Director, Brian Clements said: “Graham’s work always attracts a high level of interest at our auctions as he is one of Scotland’s most recognisable and loved artists. His humorous take on modern day situations and characters frequently leave the viewer with a smile on their face and there’s no doubt that this latest work will do exactly that.”
