An Elgin man got a pleasant surprise when his £45 bottle of whisky was sold at one of the world’s most prestigious whisky auctions for £1600.
The gentleman, who wishes to remain anonymous, had been gifted the 25 year old The Macallan – complete with presentation box - by his son almost thirty years ago, but he didn’t realise the value of the bottle had risen quite so dramatically over the years until he took it along to a McTear’s valuation event recently in Elgin.
McTear's uncovered a host of rare whiskies during the event in April, but there was no doubt the Macallan was the star of the show. The rare bottle, which was distilled in 1962, was sold at the Rare and Collectable Whisky Auction on 1st June with a promise from the seller that half the proceeds will go to his son.
Brian Clements, Managing Director at McTear’s Auctioneers, said: “Our visit to Elgin last year uncovered some fantastic items so we had an idea that there could be a few surprises again. We often see bottles of whisky appearing at valuation days that are worth considerably more than their owner paid originally, but this Macallan is a very special find.
“Whisky can be a great investment opportunity if you pick the right product and I can safely say that the 25 year old Macallan is just such a bottle. There was fierce bidding from collectors from across the globe and I am delighted that the whisky achieved such a good price.”
