Executries

McTear’s understands that when it comes to valuations for Inheritance Tax, speed and accuracy are of the essence.

We work with Scotland's solicitor firms to offer a complete valuation and auction service to executors, estate trustees and legal professionals. Valuations of entire property contents, or of individual items, are completed usually within a week of instruction and often for a fixed fee.

Our valuations encompass all apsects of traditional and modern art and antiques as well as jewellery, watches, coins and whisky.

Where no formal valuation is required, a home or office visit can be conducted free of charge.

Private Collections & Estate Sales

Estate sales and private collections require special attention. We are proud to offer a first-class, personal service to clients, with hundreds of years of auctioning experience behind us. McTear’s hosts a calendar of specialist auctions in all major categories of art and antiques, with single-owner auctions featuring throughout the year.

We recognise the demand from national and international buyers for private collections at auction and, especially, for private Scottish collections. Recent single-owner sales have shown the power of Scottish collections, when treated and marketed correctly, to exceed pre-auction expectations, in terms of sparking interest from collectors globally and in respects the hammer results.

Furthermore, we will not ‘cherry pick’ items nor disregard more modestly valued items. Rather, we are pleased to offer an international bidding audience to all items within an estate, be it a hammer price of £100,000 or £100. Our international database of bidders coupled with an extensive promotion of auctions in the printed press, on television, social media and in digital advertising, ensures the very best results for all lots consigned to sale.

Estate Sales

Single-owner auctions include the collection of the late William Mowat-Thomson, an iconic figure in the Scottish dance world. McTear’s was delighted to bring to auction the wonderful collection housed in his fabulous Georgian home in Edinburgh’s west end, with many outstanding results.

Further stunning private collections of Asian Art and Lalique glass were brought to auction by our team, again enjoying huge success.
