More than a Game: Sporting Medals & Shirts

Date: 14th Oct, 2022 12:30

Rare and important pieces from the earliest days of Association football will feature in this carefully curated specialist sale.

Topping the sale are two football shirts, one worn during the first official Irish Free State home tie vs. Italy in 1927, the other during Rangers only European trophy win in 1972. Further details are presented within.

Alongside these, we will include a English vs. Scottish XI medal awarded to Heart of Midlothian stalwart and early club legend, Bobby Walker. Dated to 1899, the award is an unusual survivor.

Alongside this is an interesting Rangers display said to have once hung in the halls of Ibrox itself. Mounted with share certificates dating from shortly after the club became incorporated in 1899, these are presented alongside a cheque made payable to the Gers most famous manager, Bill Struth.

Items of contrasting Olympic interest will also be offered. A most curious Wenlock Olympiad padlock will be sure to catch collectors’ eyes, this piece relating to the eponymous competition that inspired THE modern day Olympic Games. From the 21st century, an Olympic torch used in the lead up to the Athens 2004 homecoming games stands as an iconic symbol of those very Games.

Football memorabilia struck a chord with collectors in this banner Sporting auction.

A rare SFA Scottish Cup Winner’s Medal of 1933-34 awarded to Willie Nicholson of Rangers F.C. sparked competition among ‘Gers collectors with the fact that Nicholson scored a brace in the final only adding to the selling for an impressive £3,200.

The very next lot saw an even more protracted bidding battle between two phone lines for an important Internazionale jersey from the 1966-67 season, believed to be that of Italian legend Mauro Bicicli – after five-plus minutes of back and forth the hammer finally fell at a spectacular £9,000.

Golf and fishing were both well represented with a private collection including a signed Tiger Woods photograph chiming well with bidders fresh from the Open at St. Andrews before reels by famed maker Hardy Bros. of Alnwick amongst others keenly contested.
