Whisky | Autumn Colours & Winter Warmers

Date: 11th Nov, 2022 10:30

While whisky can be a great drink for every season, there’s something magical about sitting by a roaring fireplace with a dram in hand as the nights draw in and the leaves fall from the trees. This month’s Highlights included a great selection of vintage Macallan and Springbank, not to mention some great examples from closed distilleries such as St Magdalene, Banff, Rosebank and Brora. But, without a doubt the most eye-catching lot was the 1964 vintage Glenfiddich 40-Year-Old from Hart Brothers, presented in a stunning Atlantis Crystal decanter decorated with etched Sterling Silver and gold encrusted medallions. And for those of you partial to a drop of wine we offered a great selection of Italian Barolo and French Bordeaux

More than a Game: Sporting Medals & Shirts

Date: 14th Oct, 2022 12:30

Rare and important pieces from the earliest days of Association football will feature in this carefully curated specialist sale.

Topping the sale are two football shirts, one worn during the first official Irish Free State home tie vs. Italy in 1927, the other during Rangers only European trophy win in 1972. Further details are presented within.

Alongside these, we will include a English vs. Scottish XI medal awarded to Heart of Midlothian stalwart and early club legend, Bobby Walker. Dated to 1899, the award is an unusual survivor.

Alongside this is an interesting Rangers display said to have once hung in the halls of Ibrox itself. Mounted with share certificates dating from shortly after the club became incorporated in 1899, these are presented alongside a cheque made payable to the Gers most famous manager, Bill Struth.

Items of contrasting Olympic interest will also be offered. A most curious Wenlock Olympiad padlock will be sure to catch collectors’ eyes, this piece relating to the eponymous competition that inspired THE modern day Olympic Games. From the 21st century, an Olympic torch used in the lead up to the Athens 2004 homecoming games stands as an iconic symbol of those very Games.

Other Times, Other Places: Fine Furniture & Works of Art

Other Times, Other Places: Fine Furniture & Works of Art

Date: 13th Oct, 2022 12:30

The joy of antiques is their ability to transport us to other times and places, indeed a very different world than ours.

A fine salon suite takes us to Belle Epoque France of the late 19th and early 20th centuries when Toulouse-Lautrec haunted the Moulin Rouge and Gustave Eiffel built his famous tower.

We then travel to Russia with a rare Imperial biscuit porcelain figure produced by the Gardner Porcelain Factory: modelled as a peasant mother clutching her child, we can imagine the biting cold of Siberian snows.

A whirlwind tour of central Europe takes in the factories of Herend in Vienna and Zsolnay Pecs in Hungary; after a quick detour to the Ginori workshop in Tuscany we return to Scotland with two excellent examples of textiles, the first a William IV sampler worked by a Richmond Kilpatrick of Edinburgh with the second, a large and fine Paisley shawl of circa 1860 bringing us close to home.

September
Whisky: Liquid History

Whisky: Liquid History

Date: 30th Sep, 2022 10:30

What is it about whisky that’s so enticing? On this day two of our Taste of Scotland celebration, we will find out!

Sure, it encompasses a broad spectrum of styles and flavours, but the same could be said of wine, beer, and rum. Maybe we’re biased, but whisky is more than just a drink, it’s portal to another place and time (and we don’t mean waking up, fully clothed on your sofa the next morning).

This month’s auction isn’t just full of wonderful whiskies, it’s full of time machines. For those with means to do so, you could sample a Macallan than began its journey to your glass nearly 84 years ago, in December 1938; be transported to the windswept coast of Islay as you experience a wonderful old Laphroaig Pre-Royal Warrant or Sherriff’s Bowmore, or ring in the new Millennium again with Springbank! Remember, even a 10-year-old whisky bottled this year was distilled when the world was a very different place. These aren’t just whiskies, they’re liquid history.

Whisky: A Kaleidoscopic Spectrum of Spirit

Whisky: A Kaleidoscopic Spectrum of Spirit

Date: 19th Aug, 2022 10:30

The August whisky auction saw a busy room yield some excellent hammer prices. It almost goes without saying these days that Macallan was one of the top performers, with three bottles of 25-Year-Old Anniversary Malt achieving over £3000 each. Dalmore delivered the goods too, in the form of a sublime 50-Year-Old, as well as a decedent 1960 vintage 25 Year-Old, and a sumptuous 1973 33-Year-Old, each of which exceeded expectations. In amongst the heavyweight offerings there were still plenty of great drinkers to be had at reasonable prices, and we remiss if we didn’t mention some of the miniature lots that offered bidders the chance to sample old and rare expressions without having to break the bank.

The Luxury Edit | Rolex, Cartier & More

Date: 11th Aug, 2022 14:30

The Watches Auction is no stranger to big names such as Rolex, Cartier, Breitling, and more and it just so happens that these brands amongst others will feature in the August Watches Auction.

A sleek Breitling Transocean wrist watch features alongside an equally as sleek and sporty lady’s Rolex Oyster Perpetual. The Arts of Asia

The Arts of Asia

Date: 10th Jun, 2022 12:00

A small but fine collection of Chinese jades raised a total of just shy of £6,000 in this, our dedicated auction of Asian Art. The six lots comprised a variety of forms and functions, with two mutton jade roundels being the stand out fetching £2,600 on the hammer. An unusual armorial tankard also attracted fierce competition. The oddity featured the heraldic device after that of William Nassau de Zuylestein, Earl of Rochford, though contained an amusing mistake. The original motto 'Spes Durat Avorum' ('Let the Hope of our Ancestors Endure') has here been misspelt by the decorator as 'Spes Durat Amorum', a charming and easily made mistake by a native worker working to an order, changing the meaning to 'Let the Hope of our Love(r)s Endure'.

Entries are invited for our next Asian art sale taking place on 2nd September. Advice on selling is free and without obligation. Lot 1405 was an incredible collection of football themed stamps across six custom-made albums. With such a high degree of completion and global representation throughout, it’s no wonder the collection scored £1200 on the hammer.

The Gilded Age: Gold, Silver & Luxury Accessories

The Gilded Age: Gold, Silver & Luxury Accessories

Date: 9th Jun, 2022 10:30

The Gilded Age auction truly lived up to its name, delivering impressive results across a diverse range of silver, gold and luxury lots.

An 18ct gold mounted set of three pens by Royama was fit for a king or, rather, a sultan, bearing as they did the blazon of the Sultanate of Oman and went for £1,400 after an international bidding battle. The market for luxury goods remains buoyant with an Aspinal ‘Brit’ bag carrying on the Jubilee good feelings at £300 while Prada, Gucci and Alexander McQueen fashion accessories all sold strongly.

Delicate silver continues to appeal to an avid collecting base and a particularly fine Victorian ‘Castle Top’ vinaigrette by the respected maker Charles Deakin belied its size and weight to sell at an impressive £1,000. McTear’s continues to celebrate the modernist silver movement and few finer examples than the life-size and articulated crab caviar dish by the William Comyns firm have been seen at auction in recent years.  It duly caught the eye of numerous interested parties with the hammer coming down at £4,000.

Consignments of antique and modernist silver, certified designer fashion and accessories, collectible pens, cigarette lighters and luxury goods are invited for our next auction taking place on 1st September. Advice on selling silver is free and without obligationmake an appointment to visit our Glasgow Galleries, or contact our specialists by clicking this link and completing the short form.

Designed for Life saw fierce competition and impressive results with devotees of Arts & Crafts, Scandinavian and Continental design joining the bidding from Glasgow and across the world.

The best of British ceramics were on offer with a Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre bowl by the renowned Daisy Makeig-Jones, before a private collection of Royal Worcester and Royal Crown Derby stole the show with strong competition from the UK and Ireland for these fine quality pieces showcasing the virtuosity of the potters and painters employed by these historic factories – an impressive pair of fruit painted vases led the way at £4,200.

Of slightly more eclectic taste, a rare Louis Wain ‘Haw Haw’ Cat appealed to the devoted collecting base and sold for £750. A strong showcase of furniture prompted competition with two Ligne Roset corner sofa units impressing at a combined £2,700 while Scandinavian design again proved strong with £1,000 for a coffee table by Sven Ellekaer for Christian Linneberg being a highlight. Finally, much pre-sale interest had been received for an early 20th century Louis Vuitton travel trunk; bidders were encouraged by the originality and pursued it to £2,200.

Whisky: Silent Stills & Tiny Treasures

Whisky: Silent Stills & Tiny Treasures

Date: 15th Apr, 2022 10:30

With the fantastic selection of whiskies available there was no doubt that the April whisky auction would attract plenty of attention. We were pleasantly stunned by the two Macallan 1970 Fine & Rare miniatures that achieved hammer prices of £1900 and £1600, more than twice their estimated value. Another star of the show was a 1972 22-Year-Old Brora from the Rare Malts range that sold for £4800 proving that, despite the distillery re-opening in 2021, demand for these older vintages hasn’t diminished.
