With catalogue contents that could be mistaken for Lalique Magazine, its doubtless that discussion of the highlights of the British & Continental Ceramics & Glass Auction on 8 April must include the famous French glass maker, Rene Lalique. Perhaps the most desirable lot of the day, a Lalique ‘Serpent’ vase took the top spot, eventually selling to a buyer based in London against strong international online and telephone competition. Many of the beautiful Lalique vases in this sale sold to buyers in the South of England, with others of note selling to buyers in France, and more locally, in the West of Scotland.

A glorious day for glass, this terrific sale encompassed period examples from the Victorian, William IV and Regency eras, marvels by makers from Monart to Moser, and of course fine French glass including Galle, Daum and Baccarat.

Not to be overlooked, ceramics likewise performed extremely well. An early 20th century Italian terracotta bust of a lady attracted strong interest, as did a fine and large Lladro figure group, each eventually selling for £1,500. Other highlights in this category came from Moorcroft and Meissen, early Belleek and studio pottery by Chiu-I-Wu.

The next auction of British & Continental Ceramics & Glass takes place on 1 July 2021. Entries are invited.
