This August’s British & International Pictures Auction made for a great start to a week of 5 auctions at McTear’s. We saw strong bids from around the globe, from New Zealand to the United States. Familiar artists such a Ralston Gudgeon and James McBey performed well, alongside some more rare examples to the saleroom.
A recent favourite at our British & International Pictures Auction has been Arthur MacDonald, and his popularity continued, with two of his pictures selling with a £1,400 hammer price for each.
British artist Edmund Blampied was represented in three lots, and while the lots of etchings did well, lot 61, his small oil did exceptionally well, with an estimate of £1,000-2,000, and a hammer price of £3,700.
The unrivalled star of the sale was lot 39, an absolutely stunning oil by Dame Laura Knight. The oil, Sun Rays on the Malvern Hills, caught much attention on the view and generated plenty of interest. There was a lot of competition, with a number of bidders on the phone and online, leading to the picture soaring over its estimate of £4,000-6,000, with a hammer price of £26,000.
The next British & International Pictures Auction will take place on 3rd November and entries are now invited. To consign to this auction, make an appointment to visit our Glasgow Galleries or contact our specialists by clicking this link and completing the short form.
