Results page from The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction.
The auction saw strong competition from internet and phone bidders across the globe and made the sale, for bidders, sellers and browsers alike, an exciting event to watch. Auction records were set, lots achieved higher than estimate prices, and the competition was not only focused on well-loved auction room veterans such as Peter Howson and Graham McKean, but other artists, known and unknown, took the spotlight.
Two lots 525 and 517 are memorable – both stand out works by Glasgow School of Art graduate Ryan Mutter. The hammer came down on The Cutty Sark in Moonlight at £3,000, setting a new auction record for the artist, while a short time later Beneath the Titanic, estimated at £800-1,200, also reached close to the record, fetching an impressive £2,800.
Sculptures by George Wyllie, along with watercolours by the late Glasgow artist all sold well, with the sculpture, Nae Direction, achieving a hammer price of £1,300 against an estimate of £400-600.
Perhaps the fiercest bidding was for a large pair of indistinctly signed but highly decorative oils. Each of the pictures, In Your Head and About Face, were estimated at a mere £200-300 - they achieved a combined hammer price of £3,050.
