This May’s Scottish Contemporary Art Auction saw plenty of bidding and excitement throughout the 305 lots on offer, with enthusiastic bidding online, on the telephones and in the room. Stand-out lots included a mixed media by Anthony Amos selling for £1,500, a watercolour by Ron Lawson selling for £3,000, an oil by Sheila Macmillan selling for £1,400. High prices were also fetched for artists William Birnie and Zhanna Pechugina, both artists being regular fixtures in each Scottish Contemporary Art Auction.
The high point of the afternoon was the sale of the watershed work by John Bellany. Lot 65, The Finnon Smoker, is an exemplary and magnificent early oil by the famed Scottish artist, created when he was just 23. After tense bidding online, in the books, and over the phone, the monumental artwork was finally knocked down at £80,000.
Entries are invited for our next dedicated Scottish Contemporary Art auction taking place on 10th July. For a complimentary, no-obligation valuation, make an appointment to visit our Glasgow Galleries, or contact our specialists by clicking this link and completing the short form.
