A Victorian automaton proved – for the second consecutive auction – the strong demand for these fantastic 19th century novelties. Modelled as a conjurer performing a magic trick, this quirky automaton attracted sensational interest, far exceeding high estimate with a magical hammer price of £2,600. A second automaton, modelled as a girl dressed as a clown, sold for a hammer price of £850.
In other highlights, a much anticipated collection of Scottish dirks proved especially popular, with four of the dirks selling for a rather bonnie hammer price of £2,000 each. A marvellous 19th century Italian rosewood marquetry corner cabinet sold for £1,800, whilst an unusual set of weathered, rustic garden furniture sold for £1,000. Meanwhile, a late Victorian rocking horse galloped straight past top estimate, selling for a hammer price of £550.
The next Works of Art, Medals, Militaria & Furniture auction takes place on 2 July 2021. Entries are invited. For a complimentary, no-obligation valuation, visit our Glasgow Galleries or contact a specialist by clicking this link and completing the short form.
