2022’s maiden Scottish Contemporary Art Auction went off with a bang. Animated bidding began right away with the first lot, an oil by Gordon K Mitchell, bringing strong competition from the saleroom, the phones and online. The excitement continued throughout the afternoon, with artists including John Bellany, Peter Howson, Gerard Burns and Nael Hanna fetching fierce competition, often soaring above pre-auction estimates. Pictures were not the only stand out lots, with sculptures big and small inviting a flurry of bids. The electric energy in the saleroom continued right up until the last lots, which included a print by Bob Dylan and watercolours by Bryan Evans.
McTear's is the only auction house to hold an auction dedicated to Scottish Contemporary Art. Entries are currently invited for the next Auction, taking place 6 March.
