Note: Painter and teacher, born in Aberdeen of Italian parents. He studied at Gray’s School of Art there, 1932–8, the following year travelling and studying on the continent. In 1942 he won the RSA’s Guthrie Award. From 1946–50 Morrocco was a part-time teacher at Gray’s School, becoming head of painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, from 1950. Won the Medaglio d’Oro, San Vito, Italy, in 1957. Morrocco was a member of Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts and RSW and was elected RSA in 1962. As well as being a still life, portrait, figure and landscape painter he illustrated Lockhart’s Anatomy and painted murals for St Columba’s Church, Glenrothes, and Liff Hospital, Dundee. Morrocco was a decorative artist of great felicity, using a rich and varied palette. He had a British Council show in Aberdeen in 1949, others following at Compass Gallery in Glasgow, a retrospective at Dundee Art Gallery in 1981, a series at Thackeray Gallery, with a memorial at Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh, 1999, and retrospective at Open Eye Gallery, Edinburgh, 2002. RSA, Scottish Arts Council and many Scottish galleries hold his work. The painter Leon Morrocco was his son, his wife the artist Vera Mercer. Lived in Dundee, Angus.
