JIMMY MCMENEMY OF CELTIC F.C. - HIS SCOTTISH FOOTBALL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP GOLD MEDAL 1935/36

SCOTTISH FOOTBALL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP GOLD MEDAL 1935/36,
awarded to James 'Jimmy' McMenemy of Celtic F.C., the obverse with central shield shaped cartouche with lion rampant motif, and inscribed 'SCOTTISH FOOTBALL LEAGUE', the reverse inscribed 'CHAMPIONSHIP won by CELTIC F.C. JAMES McMENEMY 1935-36', in nine carat gold, 5cm high including bale, approx. 24g

Note: Jimmy McMenemy was a Scottish footballer who most notably played for Celtic between 1902 and 1920, later serving as assistant manager during the 1930s. He has been described by the club as "a true Celtic legend". During his time as a player he won the League 11 times, the Scottish Cup 6, the Glasgow Cup 8, and the Glasgow Charity Cup 10. After hanging up his boots, he spent many years away from football and some time as a publican. He came back to Partick Thistle as a coach, before returning to Celtic in 1934 as training assisting to Willie Maley, the same legendary manager who had brought him to the club as a player three decades before.

This unusual medal (awarded not to a player or manager, but a coach) is a rare survivor from the 1935-36 season, when Celtic triumphed over city rivals Rangers by six points to win their eighteenth title, and first in a decade...
