JAMES TORRANCE (SCOTTISH 1859 - 1916), THE DAY DREAMER oil on canvas, inscribed verso 25cm x 20cm Original gilt frame. Provenance: Sold McTear's 14.06.2011 lot 21 for £1500 (hammer). Note : An extremely rare example of the work of James Torrance. Only two previous works by Torrance are recorded at auction in the last 20 years - ''Honesty'' sold by Christie's Glasgow 20th April 1995 lot 975 selling for £5500 and ''The Blue Pidgeon'' sold by Sotheby's 15th April 2002 lot 47 for £1600 (both hammer prices). - source www.artinfo.com .The sitter for ''The Day Dreamer'' is believed to be Torrance's daughter who also sat for ''The Blue Pidgeon''. James Torrance was born in Glasgow and worked in London for many years as a highly successful portrait painter and illustrator. His work includes illustrations for 'Scottish Fairy and Folk Tales' edited by Sir George Douglas (1893). On his return to Scotland he married the flower painter Louise Ellen Perman (tutor of James Stuart Park) and they lived in Helensburgh. The James Torrance Memorial Award is presented each year by the Royal Glasgow Institute (RGI)
