* WILLIAM ROBBIE (SCOTTISH 1887 - 1967)
CLYDESDALE STALLION, CRAGIE TOPSMAN (22890)

oil on paper, signed and titled
framed and under glass

image size 31cm x 38cm, overall size 38cm x 44cm

Note: William Robbie was one of thirteen children born to a farmworker and his wife in the Parish of Old Deer (Buchan, Aberdeenshire). He showed artistic promise from an early age, however modest earnings prevented the family from sending Robbie to art school, instead he flourished in the Buchan schools winning several prizes for his work. Clydesdale horses were of prime importance to arable farmers before the advent of the tractor and as such were worthy and prized subjects of the artist's talents. William Robbie focussed on horses and adopted folk art techniques, including using cigarette packet foil to highlight the horse brasses. His horse portraits have been sold by Christie's, Bonhams and in our auctions.

A condition report is offered as an indication of any issues visible to the naked eye. As none of our staff is a professional conservator or restorer, buyers must satisfy themselves in respect of condition and McTear’s can provide contact details of local professionals who can provide fully comprehensive expert reports, usually for a modest charge. The condition report does not form part of any contract between McTear's and the buyer, and all lots are offered "as is" in accordance with our Terms of Business available on our website.
