Note: John Watson (Gordon) was encouraged to take up portrait painting by Sir Henry Raeburn, a family friend of the Watsons. Raeburn painted the famous portrait of the present sitter’s mother “Mrs. Lumsden”, now in the Hunterian, Glasgow. Watson Gordon himself went on to be knighted for services to art, and was President of the Royal Scottish Academy.
