EMIL ANDRE SCHEFER (FRENCH 1896 - 1942), CRAMPTON LOCOMOTIVE, PARIS - STRASBOURG (representing the departure of the Strasbourg train under the old hall of the East Railway Station during the Second Empire) watercolour on paper, signed 21cm x 32cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Note:Émile André Schefer was a French painter and illustrator best known for his railway subjects. He was commissioned to produce a series of posters to promote the railways which now routinely sell at auction for upwards of $1500. The example offered is the original although prints of this watercolour were produced. Schefer was killed in a road accident involving a Gestapo car in Paris on 15th March 1942. In 1946 The Schefer Committee was formed under the aegis of the Artistic and Intellectual Union of Railwaymen French (UAICF). Since then, the committee awards an annual EA Schefer prize for artists evoking the railway and the men who run it.
