John was born in Stirling in 1983 and grew up in Clackmannanshire at the foot of the Ochil Hills, where he attended Alva Academy. After moving to Glasgow his career started at L.S. Smellie & Sons auctioneers in Hamilton, where his passion for antiques was ignited. In the near two decades there, John gained expertise in a wide range of antiques and art, with a particular interest in Chinese ceramics. John joined McTear’s in 2024 and brings a wealth of experience to the valuation team.
Outside of work John enjoys listening to music, playing the drums and travelling all over Scotland fly fishing for trout and salmon, although lately his time to do so has been limited, as he and his wife welcomed their son Harris into the world in 2023.
