Military Watches

Watches were once worn as pendants around the neck. Later they were tucked away in pockets, on chains. One legend goes that a 19th century German naval officer, struggling to check his pocket watch while both hands operated a gun, fixed his pocket watch to his wrist with a leather strap. The first wristwatch.

By WWII military watches had the most comfortable straps of any watch on the market, as well as other useful features like luminous digits and easy to read dials. Such carefully designed timepieces are widely sought after today. McTear’s hosts Scotland’s only dedicated military watch auction, often featuring examples by the ‘dirty dozen’, the twelve Swiss manufacturers commissioned to supply the British Ministry of Defence during the Second World War.
