A Specialist’s Favourites

Specialist Jenny MacLeod takes us through her favourites from the upcoming Scottish Contemporary Art Auction...

One of my favourite lots in this month’s Scottish Contemporary Art Auction is a gorgeous still life by Scottish artist, Kirsty Wither (b. 1968). Sultry Big Bunch is a lavish still life executed in Wither’s signature gradual layering of colour and paint to create a wonderfully deep composition. Lot 578 is a particularly opulent example and the palette creates a shimmering effect which is complimented by the silver leaf frame. This lot carries an auction estimate of £1,500-2,500.

Another favourite of mine is a charming oil by Catriona Millar (b. 1956) (lot 589). Like Wither, Millar’s works are instantly recognisable in the layering of paint to create texture, however unlike Wither, Millar’s work is purely figural. This beautiful painting carries an auction estimate of £800-1200, and with wedding season in full swing, this could be the perfect gift for an art loving bride.

Gordon Hope Wyllie’s (1930 – 2005) depiction of Ben Lomond is a fresh take on the genre of Scottish landscape painting. Wyllie’s love for the Scottish countryside is evident in his abstract depictions which feature a wonderful attention to detail, demonstrating his intimate knowledge of the landscape. This colourful mixed media is lot 663 and carries an auction estimate of £200-300.

My final favourite lot comes in the form of collector favourite, Andrei Bludov (b 1962). As a predominantly a figural painter, this cityscape is an unusual one for the artist, but nevertheless it’s instantly recognisable in the lively colour palette and textural layering of the paint. Always a favourite at McTear’s, lot 612 is sure to attract attention on the viewing and carries an auction estimate of £500 – 1000.
