A cut above

12/11/2018     Jewellery

The Asscher cut diamond is one that is rare to auction and has experienced somewhat of a revival in recent years. Coveted by dealers and private buyers alike, jewellery set with diamonds cut to these proportions is always in demand. The cut was created by two brothers in 1902 but it only first became popular in the 1920s.

The cut was patented by the Asscher family and this was lifted in the early 1940s. This cut similar to the emerald cut although the overall shape is square. There are also additional facets to cropped corners of the stone, these result in a better brilliance or return of light. Lot 112 in the jewellery auction on Wednesday 21 November is an Asscher cut diamond solitaire ring.
