Bidders at McTear’s British & International Ceramics & Glass auction yesterday (1 February) were delighted to watch the sale attract exciting competition both in the room and online.

One of the surprising success stories of the sale this month was lot 1210, the Carlton Ware vase decorated with the ‘Chinese Bird & Cloud’ pattern. This exotic pattern, introduced in the 1930’s and designed by Violet Elmer, always proves popular with collectors but doesn’t come up for sale as often as other Carlton Wares such as ‘Rouge Royale’ and ‘Cobweb’. With other examples of 1920’s – 30’s Carlton Ware patterns, including ‘Flies’ selling well in recent months, are we seeing a trend emerging for interwar period patterns featuring jewel-like colours and exotic themes?

Lot 1250: Royal Worcester Cabinet Coffee Can and Saucer was another star of the sale. With its hand-painted decoration of fruits by the ceramic artist William Hale, and golden interior, this classy little cup is the perfect addition to any ceramic collector’s china cabinet. William Hale (?–1930) was one of the principal artists at Royal Worcester from when he joined the firm in 1874. This cup and saucer proved to be to the taste of the bidders with good competition in the room and online.
