Collectable silver selling well at Glasgow auction!

25/03/2015     Silver

Spring has truly sprung and so has the price of quality silver. The Silver Auction, held on Tuesday 24th March, comprised many exciting collectors’ objects and there was plenty of pre-auction interest!

Top billing came towards the end of the sale, in the form of a pair of Hanau silver and ivory figures by Berthold Muller (lot 363). Berthold Muller was a master of ornamentation and catered for the wealthy merchants in Hanau, a wealthy city, at the turn of the 20th century. They were estimated at a reasonable £2,000-3,000 and there was the expected interest during the view. But nothing could have predicted the eventual hammer price of £5,000! They also needed restoration as one of the figures had lost her head! A really super result.

Another pleasant highlight came in the form of a tea service by the renowned Regency silversmith Paul Storr. Lot 362, the three piece tea service, was rather late for his work and was hallmarked for London 1838, but the quality was outstanding and the eventual selling price was £1,800.

Other interesting results were, lot 333, a rare Irish silver corkscrew, making £1,500 and a pair of fine continental silver candlesticks (lot 361) that made £1,200.

Looking across the sale, you cannot disagree that the market for collectable silver is in full bloom!
