Decorative Arts all round!

Should it be a surprise that the top five selling lots in The British & Continental Ceramics & Glass Auction on 2nd June were 20th century decorative arts objects? Perhaps not, but it clearly illustrates where collecting interests lie in today’s marketplace.

The top selling lot was the wonderful pair if William Moorcroft candlesticks (lot 491), having pewter mounts marked Tudric, so made for the esteemed retailers Liberty & Co. they sold for £900. If that was not enough, the Moorcroft pair of vases with leaf and berry pattern (lot 462), came forth in the top sellers chart making £700.

Featuring at number two and three in the top selling lots were pieces by the famous glass maker Rene Lalique. Synonymous with the Art Deco style, they were terribly sought after. What could be more charming than a car mascot with St Christopher on it to keep you safe. The example, sold as lot 557, had a small chip but still made an astonishing £800.

The other piece of Lalique glass was a scent bottle, with two intaglio figures engraved into the body (lot 558), it would grace any discerning collectors chattel and it made a hammer price of £800 to match!
