Making an impression – Stephen Conroy

03/07/2018     Scottish Contemporary Art

Picture Specialist, Jenny’s favourite lots in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction on 8 July come in the form of three etchings by renowned figurative painter, Stephen Conroy (b. 1964). Educated at the Glasgow School of Art between 1982 and 1987, Conroy is noted for depicting elusive, formally dressed figures in dark settings.

Silence (lot 11) is a particularly dramatic example of his work; a ghostly image is achieved through his use of strong contrasts whilst the drypoint creates a sense of movement.

Even Here the Ground is Uneven (lot 12) is surrealist in tone, with a pensive male figure set against the horizon, whilst lot 13 echoes the stirring images of Francis Bacon.

Each etching carries an auction estimate of £500-800, £400-600 and £300-500 respectively.
