Out of this world watch sells for £30,000

A unique wristwatch containing parts of a rare meteorite has been sold for £30,000

The platinum and diamond Rolex Day-Date is a beautiful timepiece in itself, however, it was the stunning dial that boosted the price of the watch at the McTear’s.

McTear’s Head of Watches, Sarah Cotter, explains:  “The dial of the watch has been crafted from the famous Gibeon meteorite which fell to earth in Namibia in prehistoric times. The stunning dial is silvery grey in appearance and catches the light beautifully.

“Only a small handful of dials were created and no more will ever be produced, which means the watch is a true collector's piece.

“There was a lot of interest in the timepiece which made for a very lively auction. It is a lovely watch and we are delighted that it made such a good price.”

The Rolex Day-Date was introduced in 1956 and was only produced in solid eighteen-carat gold or platinum. It was the first watch to display not only the date but also the day. The Gibeon example has a diamond set meteorite dial and comes with leather box, outer box, papers, swing tag and Rolex handkerchief.

In addition to the Gibeon and other Rolex watches, the auction included a range of impressive timepieces by Omega, Cartier and Longines.

The prices quoted include buyer’s premium and VAT thereon.
