Rare Lalique vase makes top hammer price at Mctear's!

The undisputed star lots of The British & International Ceramics & Glass Auction, held 15th August at McTear’s, was a fine collection of eight rare vases made by renowned glass designer, René Lalique. The Monmorency vase, lot 462, was designed in 1930 by Lalique and features four rows of heavily moulded cherries. Stress fractures to the body of this vase are common, however, lot 462 was in very good condition and prompted much interest from Lalique collectors in the UK and abroad. With three telephone lines and internet interest, the vase eventually sold for £3200 hammer to a buyer in the UK. As all of featured vases showcased the golden age of Lalique, each vase attracted a hammer price to match. Other notable results included the Damiers vase, lot 468, designed c.1935. With enamel detailing, this vase sold for £800 hammer. Similarly, the Coqs et Plumes vase, designed in 1928 and in burnt orange glass, also sold for £800 hammer after bids in the room and online. 

Glass continued to dominate the auction, with a lovely collection of Daum Nancy vases selling well. Notable results included lot 487, the Daum Nancy Thistle Cameo Glass Vase, circa 1910 and decorated with thistle designs on acid etched cameo glass. This lot finally sold to a buyer in the room for £700 hammer. A set of twelve attractive early 20th century Italian Murano glass goblets similarly sold well, lot 479, made £280 hammer.

In terms of ceramics, Moorcroft, as ever, was well-represented and attracted much interest during the view. Lot 475, the Moorcroft ‘Moonlit Blue’ inkwell was sought-after by bidders. This pattern is particularly rare, and despite being unsigned by Moorcroft, the inkwell made £460 hammer. Similarly, the Moorcroft ‘Natural Pottery’ vase, lot 459, is a fine example of 1930s Moorcroft.
