Spectacular Sterling!

02/06/2015     Silver

One of the highest performing lots of The Silver Auction held Tuesday 2nd June was also one of the most delicate, in the form of a Continental silver and enamel cigarette case with a beautiful scene of a female nude (lot 355). The early 20th century piece epitomised the style and wonder of the age and its quality was clear to see. It was estimated at a reasonable £100-200 and there was well-deserved interest during the viewing over the weekend. The eventual hammer price was almost triple the high estimate at £550 showing that true quality holds its own!

Another pleasant highlight came in the form of a George V silver triple decanter set (lot 391), with three exceptional cut crystal decanters nestled in a delicate pierced silver frame. Even with slight chips to the decanters, probably courtesy of too many long nights on the table, they sold for over double the estimate for £460!

Other interesting results came in the form of lot 376, a late Georgian Scottish provincial soup ladle, making £220 hammer, almost double its top estimate and a very high quality rococo revival George IV teapot (lot 353) that made £500 hammer.
