The Sunshine Sapphire

01/02/2018     Jewellery

Bidders at McTear's Jewellery Auction last night were excited to watch yet another sapphire ring soar past its estimated price. Lot 754 was a yellow sapphire dress ring on which the hammer fell at an astounding thirty-two times its lower estimate. Selling at £4800* to an England-based phone bidder, the stone weighed an impressive 12.50 carats and had deep yellow to orange tones. With virtually no visible inclusions, bidders on the phone, online and in the saleroom realised this was a stone not to be missed.

The sale of this lot mirrored lot 4 from the jewellery sale on 14 January. This was a Victorian sapphire five stone ring, which sold for sixteen times its lower estimate.

With the recent success of these sapphires, could it be that coloured stones are set to overtake diamonds on the desirability scale?
