Treasures from the deep

26/01/2018     Furniture & Works of Art

An interesting consignment of antique diving equipment has kept me busy this past week, as a local vendor looked to bid farewell to this curious collection of nautical knick-knacks.

Comprising eight lots in our upcoming Clocks, Musical & Scientific Instruments sale (2 February),  Trainee Valuer, James had to don his researcher's cap and do a bit of digging to uncover more information on this eclectic mix of deep-sea diving equipment.

Lots 1404 and 1429 were of particular interest, both being diver’s knifes made by the prestigious company Siebe-Gorman. Founded in 1819, the Anglo-German company is still often seen as the first name in diving equipment, and to have that name stamped on any piece is sure to gather much interest.

Alongside the diver’s knifes we have lots 1405, a pair of diving boots, 1428, a military issue diver’s torch, and 1434, a diving lamp, all of which also bear that prized maker’s mark.

This consignment will find good company amongst a number of other maritime themed lots in the upcoming sale, so be sure to wear your wetsuit, and join us on the 2nd for what’s sure to be a terrific sale!
