A Notable Casket for a Man of Note

Our Militaria, Maps & Ethnographica auction held on 3 February has many interesting items on offer.

One such lots is an impressive George V silver presentation casket. This piece has local interest, being made by George & John Morgan of Glasgow, 1981. The hinged caddy cover bears the inscription 'PRESENTED ALONG WITH THE BURGESS TICKET OF THE BURGH OF BARONY TO THE RIGHT HONOURABLE JAMES BROWN P.C., O.B.E., M.P., D.L., LL. D. IN RECOGNITION OF HIS EMINENT SERVICES TO HIS NATIVE LAND AND PARTICULARLY TO THE BURGH OF GIRVAN. GIRVIN, 7TH OCTOBER 1931'.

The body of this casket has an egg and dart border over panels of Celtic knots and dragons, with central Girvan coat of arms to one side, whilst there is JB, three-quarter columns to the corners, over draped swags and rope twist border as well as an acanthus cast bracket, silk lined interior. The casket contains a scrolled certificate with wax seal and minutes relating to Brown becoming a Freeman and Burgess of the Burgh. With an estimate of £500 - £1,000, this is a must for any silver collector.
