Art Deco aqua

Lot 36 in The Jewellery Auction on 13 January is a stylish art deco aquamarine ring. Both aquamarines, and any jewellery in the deco style, have remained very popular over the last five years at auction. Part of the beryl family, the aquamarine is considered to suit all skin colours and work with all of the traditional precious metals. It is fairly straight forward to cut and polish, adding to its popularity among jewellers and lapidarists or coloured stone cutters. It has a higher occurrence rate than many of the other types of beryl and is generally fairly free of inclusions or flaws.

The term ‘Art Deco’ came from L’Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes which was an exhibition held in Paris in 1925. The Art Deco style had begun to emerge in the previous decade but it was due to this exhibition that the style became acknowledged internationally. The strong lines and geometry of Art deco are very suited to jewellery design and manufacture in which stones are faceted with strong symmetry and to geometrically-defined rules.
