Harmony, Integrity, Industry | An Extraordinary Gold Bowl

Featuring in our June Works of Art & Fine Furniture Auction, this unassuming bowl is impressively crafted in twenty two carat gold and bears an interesting crest, that of the Rothschild family.  

  
We see the well-known family motto, CONCORDIA INDUSTRIA INTEGRITAS – Latin for Harmony, Integrity, Industry. Also evident are the ‘five arrows’, symbolic of the Rothschild name. With origins in an ancient Chinese myth, we recall how one arrow can be easily snapped, however the five arrows held together, in unity, form a strong unit and cannot be so easily broken. Family strength, therefore, lies in unity. 
  
The Rothschild adoption of this five arrows symbol comes in the form of ‘arrows up’ and ‘arrows down’, a choice made by individuals within the family though, generally, the French cohort choosing the upwards orientation and the English branch of the family keeping the arrows firmly pointing down. 

Estimated at £30,000-40,000 the bowl features in our June auction of Works of Art & Fine Furniture. Further entries are currently invited of stately bronzes and sculptures, fine wood and metal objets d’art, textiles and costume, handsome furniture, rugs and carpets.
