A match worn jersey from Rangers historic 1972 European Cup Winners Cup triumph over Dynamo Moscow will headline an auction of rare sporting memorabilia at McTear's this Friday.
The shirt, which was worn by midfielder, Alfie Conn, is the first jersey from that match to come to auction, making it one of the most important pieces of Rangers memorabilia to ever go under the hammer.
Interest in the lot is building amongst football and sporting fans across the globe, with experts at McTear’s estimating the shirt could fetch between £15,000 and £20,000 when it appears in the More than a Game: Sporting Medals & Shirts Auction on 14 October.
Commenting on the auction, our sporting specialist, James Bruce, said: “The Barca Bears have forged legendary status at Ibrox, with anything associated with their European run, and particularly the final itself, always attracting significant interest. A jersey from the Moscow game is a rare thing indeed, with this remarkable lot representing one of the most important pieces of Rangers memorabilia to ever come to auction.”
Rangers victory against Moscow on 24th May 1972, was a truly historic moment in the Club’s history. Following wins against Rennes, Sporting Club, Torino and the mighty Bayern Munich, Rangers secured the trophy with a 3-2 win over the Soviet side in a packed Nou Camp stadium in Barcelona.
Following narrow defeats in the same competition in 1961 and 1967, it was to be third time lucky for the Ibrox side, with a goal from Colin Stein and two from the legendary Willie Johnstone, sealing victory. Midfielder, Alfie Conn (b 1952), played a pivotal role in the match, as he did on so many occasions during his time at the Club between 1968 and 1974, earning him a place in Rangers Hall of Fame.
The jersey went from Conn to the Louden Tavern in Glasgow, where it was on display behind the bar for a number of years. It is now offered from a private collection of Rangers match worn shirts.
Alfie Conn’s jersey will feature in the More than a Game: Sporting Medals & Shirts Auction at our Glasgow galleries on Friday 14 October.
