Rare Scotland Cap To Headline Sporting Auction

Celtic and Scotland legend, Tommy Gemmel’s, first international cap is set to headline an auction of sporting memorabilia in Glasgow.

Gemmel’s iconic blue cap, complete with a gilt bullion embroidered crest, commemorates the player’s first call-up for Scotland in 1966, where he faced off against England in a 4-3 defeat. The lot is expected to fetch between £1,200 and £2,000 when it goes under the hammer in The Beautiful Game auction at our Glasgow galleries on 27 September.

"The cap represents not only Tommy Gemmell's remarkable career but also a key moment in Scottish football history," said McTear’s sporting specialist, James Bruce. "To own such a piece of football heritage is a rare privilege."

The auction will showcase over 200 rare and collectable sporting items, ranging from historic match-worn jerseys to prized winners’ medals. Football fans and collectors alike will find treasures that span decades of sporting history.

Another gem from the sale is Alexander Smith’s Scottish Cup Winners Gold Medal from 1897/98, awarded to the legendary Rangers player for his role in the club's victory over Kilmarnock. Crafted in nine-carat gold and inscribed with Smith's name, the medal reflects the grandeur of one of Rangers' earliest triumphs.

James Bruce adds: "Alec Smith is one of the most decorated players in Rangers' history, and this medal is a tangible piece of the legacy he left behind.”

In a unique offering for film buffs and football fans alike, the auction will also feature a Kilnockie F.C. Jersey, signed by Scottish football icon Ally McCoist and actor Robert Duvall. The lot, along with a ticket from the fictional cup final against Rangers, featured in the 1999 film A Shot at Glory.

"This jersey represents a fun and memorable moment in Scottish football’s liaison with the silver screen," commented James Bruce. "Although it is a one-of-a-kind collector’s item, the modest estimate of £80 to £120 means that it is accessible to football fans with more modest budgets."

The Beautiful Game: The Sporting Auction will take place at McTear’s on Friday 27 September at 10am.
