When is the best time to sell whisky?

Auction results - then & now

Something we’re often asked at McTear’s is “when is the best time to sell whisky?”

It’s a difficult question, as there are so many factors that influence auction prices for whisky. One distillery’s star might be on the rise while another’s wanes, and you never know what’s around the corner. So, what’s the answer? Our advice: strike while the iron’s hot.

There are so many expressions that are performing exceptionally well at the moment. For example, if you’ve picked up any of these whiskies in our past auctions, you may be pleasantly surprised by their current valuation:

Springbank 1965 Cadenhead’s Cask #2164

Then: December 2017 – Sold for £2400

Now: July 2022 – Sold for £4800

Macallan Private Eye

Then: April 2017 – Sold for £1500

Now: May 2023 – Sold for £3800

Ardbeg 25 Year Old Lord of the Isles

Now: July 2023 – Sold for £850

Clynelish 17 Year Old Manager’s Dram

Now: August 2023 – Sold for £1200

St Magdalene 20 Year Old 100 Years of Waterloo Street

Then: January 2017 – Sold for £550

Now: April 2023 – Sold for £1900

Of course, these are just a few examples, so don’t hesitate to get in touch with our whisky department for a free, up-to-date valuation. There’s no time like the present.
